Τhis course is a core introductory course in scientific research and the writing of academic papers, designed to introduce students to research methods and to familiarize them with English for academic and research purposes in the engineering sciences. It aims to help students acquire essential knowledge of research, understand how applied research is conducted, and follow the steps of the research process. Students learn how to define a research topic, conduct a systematic literature review, formulate hypotheses, carry out empirical investigations, and present their findings. At the same time, they study conventional and multimodal genres at both macro- and micro-levels, analyzing their rhetorical, structural, content, and production dimensions in STEM. The course also focuses on strategies for critical reading and emphasizes the use of AI in academic writing and composition. Finally, issues of ethics/AI ethics and academic integrity are addressed, with particular attention to responsible writing practices and strategies to avoid plagiarism in English.
